Great Divide's St Pat's Day Ride
Leaving from Refractories West on Braniff Road in the Pueblo Industrial Park, going south to United Avenue, then east and north to the Test Center. 19 miles one way for the full trip. We only rode 7 miles out due to the threat of weather; there was a winter storm warning for later in the day and predictions of rain and snow during the day. Total miles for this trip: 14.
The road is well-maintained and lightly traveled, especially on early weekend mornings. There is a series of hills which require a bit of exertion but they are not overly taxing. Michael enjoyed the hills, while Froggy liked the flats.
The scenery is excellent. There are some antelope herds and deer, plus other critters like badgers, coyotes, foxes, and a variety of birds, including raptors, frequent the area.

Great Divide provided eats in the form of a meats and cheese tray, veggies and dip, and refreshments, including homemade cookies. The kids thought this was a lot better than greasy burgers and hot dogs; the menu led to a discussion on diet and fitness. You aren't going to ride a bike any distance at any speed for any significant time when you are stuffed with greasy meat. They have also become aware of the uselessness of candy bars and other sugary snacks as 'energy foods'.
Though the threat of weather kept the crowd down and cut our day short, a great time was had by all. Michael wanted to press on, but I would rather not deal with their mother if I let them get soaked and chilled 15 miles out in the middle of nowhere. Most of the bikes were roadies, with a few mountain or cross-country bikes scattered througout.
